Under the direction of Michael Anzuini, with assistance from David Pollack, Steinert's Jazz Band and Spartan Jazz are two of several performance groups at Steinert High School. The primary focus of these two ensembles is the study of various forms of jazz literature, jazz education, jazz improvisation, and jazz theory. In addition, all students maintain membership within a music department ensemble.
The Jazz Band under the leadership of Mike Anzuini meets twice weekly for two hours per evening from November through April. The band competes weekly throughout New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania at local and regional jazz festivals. The Jazz Band carries a full complement of a modern "Big Band" with 5 saxophones, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, and a complete rhythm section that includes piano, electric guitar, upright bass, and drums. Additional instrumentation is used to enhance the sound of musical numbers. Acceptance into the Jazz Band is by audition.
Spartan Jazz, an ensemble under the leadership of Dave Pollack, also meets twice weekly for two hours throughout the months of November to April. It is during these classroom sessions that a comprehensive study of jazz literature, jazz education, basic charts, and improvisation is studied, practiced, and performed by the students. As their appreciation for jazz literature and musical performance expands they are invited by the Director to perform at the next level as a member of the Jazz Band.
The Jazz Band maintains an excellent reptuation as a quality ensemble. In recent years, the band has received many individual and ensemble awards at local, state, and regional Jazz Festivals. These awards include:
* Honorable Mention (4th Place), Class I, at the Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival.
